Roadmap to Transitional Kindergarten (TK) Success

Helping TK teachers find greatness in themselves and unlock the potential of every child.

We’ve been talking to teachers and school administrators for months about the best practices and strategies that can increase access to inclusive early learning and care (ELC) programs, specifically the transitional kindergarten (TK) program in California.

This eBook shares all our findings while tackling key TK challenges and the best sources to support school districts and families of 500,000 children eligible for this program

  • How can K12 teachers transition to early learning successfully?
  • How to ensure a TK program is aligned with all CDE Universal Preschool & Transitional Kindergarten requirements (e.g., Preschool Learning Foundations)?
  • What is the recommended credential pathway for educators?
  • What are the current TK requirements and how to prepare for 2023-2024?

The success of the program implementation will greatly depend on teachers having high-quality early learning access to:

  • Provide culturally-responsive instruction
  • Support dual language learners (DLL)
  • Improve social-emotional learning
  • Implement trauma-informed and restorative practices
  • Mitigate implicit biases to eliminate exclusionary discipline

All local educational agencies (LEAs) operating a kindergarten will need to provide a TK program for all 4-year-old children by 2025–26. What measures can we start implementing to ensure every child has access to TK as a quality learning experience the year before going to kindergarten?

My name is Cheryl and I have been a teacher since 1996. I have taught kindergarten and now I teach Jr. Kindergarten to children who are ages 4 and 5. Working with children is lifetime dream that I had as a child. I wanted children to grow and learn in a fun environment that they could go home and tell their families about. Communicating with the families can be a challenge if you don’t see them at the beginning or end of the day. The Learning Genie has helped to complete this task.

When the Learning Genie was introduced to me, I was very excited about sharing with the parents what I was teaching to the children on a more personable level. One of the most valuable features that I used was taking photos of the children doing activities and being able to send the pictures electronically to the parents on a daily basis. The parents were very excited each day to receive their email and see what their child had learned. The parents would use information we provided on a daily basis and talk about what they learned at school. This was a great conversation starter. Most children would come home from school and ask their child what they learned at school today and most would say “nothing I just played”. With the daily information I found that the children showed what they learned at school sometimes teaching their parents some things.
